Snowball and Flurry - Holiday Spectacular

Creative Director: Jeffrey Holmes (now of Iron, Wood, and Glitter LLC)

Site: Cathedral of Faith, San Jose - Winter 2020

Brief

Produce an outdoor nighttime spectacular for the holiday season in compliance with local Coronavirus safety measures.

Story

Snowball is a joyful, aspirational, and today, a particularly nervous snowman - and today, he’s facing up to his greatest opportunity yet! He’s been charged with decorating the palace for the most important of arrivals, and his performance would make or break his next big thing, so, luckily, his sister Flurry arrived to save the day! When disaster strikes, they save each other, rise above, and discover the true meaning of Christmas, love, and hope.

Design Process

Based on Jeffrey’s creative direction, the existing character concepts, client’s intentions regarding bright, hopeful tone, and blocking requirements, I developed initial concept art and then set out to create a complex, layered Photoshop file that would serve as a central production document, as a physical set for our characters, as a home base to return to after being swept away in other projections, and as a creative statement in and of itself.

Every element of this set is separated by function and depth, allowing characters to appear between the back wall and front rail, make entrances and exits, and even swing from one level to another. Some of my layers are visible to the right! This entire project was an incredible challenge that fostered immense growth for me and my skillset, so I’m grateful to my team for the opportunity and the chance to make a little magic at the end of a long and arduous year!
